Achievements of ICS Trainees in the Year 2008

02.11.08: Atit Gupta secures 3rd position in Mumbai Youth & Inter-Schools with 5/7

Two losses in the last 2 rounds pushed Atit to the 3rd place with 5/7 in the U-17 Mumbai Youth and Inter-School Chess Championshipm which was held at Goregaon Sports Club. After taking the sole lead with 5/5, Atit lost the 6th round to his ICS colleague, Kunal Modi and the last round to the ultimate winner, Amit Sukhpal.

Kunal Modi finished 4th with an identical score of 5/7 but was pushed below on lower progressive score

01.10.08: 11-year Old Harshal Mehta is now a FIDE Rated Player with 1492 ELO Points:

19.9.08: Atit Gupta secures 7th position in MSSA Inter-Schools with 7.5/9

A loss on time in the penultimate round pushed Atit Gupta to the 7th place in the MSSA Inter-School Chess Tournament, which concluded at Andhra Sabha today.

19.9.08: Priya Lotlikar Gets Bronze in MSSA Inter-Schools:

Priya Lotlikar capped a fine double by securing 3rd postion for a Bronze Medal in the MSSA Inter-Schools. Earlier she had won the DSO Inter-ward on 12th September 2008. Priya has already completed her rating performance and is expected to enter the FIDE Rating list.

19.9.08: Aastha Bafna secures 7th position in MSSA Inter-Schools with 6.5/8:

Aastha Bafna is improving with every outing and secured 7th position in the girl's event of MSSA Inter-Schools Chess Tournament. Kavya Shah finished 9th in this 104-players event.

Great Results at DSO !! 23.08.08

ICS trainees, Atit Gupta, Aastha Bafna, Abhishek Shetty, Sulagna Das and Kunal Modi secured top places in the Borivali ward DSO tournament, which concluded on 22/08/08 and have qualified for the Inter-Ward tournaments.

While Atit expectedly won the event with 6/6, Aastha Bafna & Sulagna Das secured 2nd positon and 3rd position in girl's section respectively.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Shetty and Kavya Shah won the Malad ward in the Boys and Girls' section respectively by winning 5/5.

Aastha & Atit Wins Ryan's Inter-Zonal !! 28.07.08

Aastha Bafna & Atit Gupta won the Girls and Boys' section of Ryan Group of School's Inter-Zonal Chess Tournament with a perfect score!! Both have qualified to represent Ryan in all the Inter-School and District Events.Congratulations.

Kunal Modi Gets an ELO Rating of 1722, Priya Lotlikar & Harshal Mehta to Follow: 01.07.08

13-year old trainee, Kunal Modi of Thakur Vidyamandir, Kandivali is the latest trainee to enter the FIDE Rating List. In the just released July 2008 list, Kunal enters with a rating of 1722 ELO points. Congrats!!

Meanwhile, 12-year old Harshal Mehta has also completed his rating requirements with a score of 2.5/9 in the recently concluded Sangli and Nagpur rating tournaments. He would be figuring in the October 2008 rating list.

14-year Priya Lotlikar, who has a score of 1/6 at the Under-13 Aditya Birla Nationals, 1/3 at Sangli Women's Rating was expected to enter the July 2008 list however, her name has not appeared. We are following the matter.

Jay Narale Completes Partial Requirement: 15.05.08

11-year old, Jay Narale from St.Joseph High School, Malad has completed the partial rating requirement in the ongoing MIO at Goregaon Sports Club.

Jay has played 4 rated players and has scored 1 point. The notable fact is that this is Jay's 1st rating event!

We wish that Jay would earn his ratings soon.

Kunal Modi & Priya Lotlikar Completes Rating: 14.05.08

14-year old Kunal Modi & Priya Lotlikar have completed their rating requirements at the ongoing Mumbai Mayor's International Chess Tournament. Atit and Priya are set to enter to the July 08 rating list with a rating of 1700+ Congrats!!

I trust both of you would really work hard to increase your ratings.

Atit Gupta Gets his FIDE Rating!!:

Its' party time at ICS as Atit Gupta gets his FIDE Rating of 1733 ELO Points over 10 games in the just released April 2008 FIDE Rating List!!

Congratulations Atit!!

He had completed his rating performance at the Suraj International Rating Tournament at Sangli in December 2007.

14-year old Atit, a IX standard student of St.Lawrence High School, Borivali (West) had started his coaching stint in November 2006. He has played in just 3 FIDE Rating tournaments and 1 State Under-13 Tournament! Being a hard working student, Atit has got the potential to break 2000 ELO in a year's time. He has now set his sight in the ensuing Mumbai International Open in May 2008, wherein he wants to perform creditably against higher rated & titled players!

Pranav, Harshil & Harshit Secures Prizes (23.03.2008): Sri Sri Ravishankar Vidyamandir is the only School in Borivli, which has introduced Chess as one of the optional subjects for their students. They are conducting regular Inter-Class events for their trainees. And, in one of the winter tournaments held on 22/02/08, the following trainees of ICS won the prizes:

1.Pranav Jain IV Standard (3rd Prize), 2. Harshit Shiroya - III Standard (2nd Prize), Harshil Shiroya - III Standard (2nd Prize).

Kunal Modi Triumphs (21.03.2008): Kunal Modi of Thakur Vidya Mandir, who has already completed his partial rating perfomance, reigned supreme in the U-16 Category at the Chanakya Chess Club's Rapid Chess Tournament, which was held at Wilson College on 20th March 2008.

Besides Kunal, all the other 3 trainees of the ICS, Atit Gupta (6th place in U-16), Kavya Shah (3rd in Girls) and Parmi Shah (2nd place in Girls U-12) also won the prizes.

13-year old Atit Gupta of St. Lawrence High School, Borivali (West) has completed his full  rating performance at the Sanjay Kasliwal Memorial FIDE Rating Tournament at Indore in November 2007 & Sangli FIDE Rating Tournament in December 2007 with a score of 2/10. He is expected to enter the April 2008 rating list with ELO 1744. Atit, who had started his coaching stint in November 2006 has played in just 3 FIDE Rating tournaments and 1 State Under-13 Tournament at Sangli. He has got the potential to break 2000 ELO in a year's time.


13-year old Kunal Modi of Thakur Vidya Mandir High School, Kandivali (East) has completed his partial rating performance at the Sanjay Kasliwal Memorial FIDE Rating Tournament at Indore in November 2007 & Sangli FIDE Rating Tournament in December 2007 with a score of 2.5/8. He just needs to meet one more rated player to complete the rating requirement. Kunal is expected to get rating of 1660. Kunal also had started his coaching in November 2006 and has set an ambition to cross 2000 ELO.


7-year old Sayandeep Biswas secured a creditable 15th place in the Maharashtra Under-11 State Championship held at Sangli in August 2007. His only losses in he tournament were to the rated players. He secured 12th position in the Under-7 State Championship held at Mumbai in October 2007. He has also played in two Under-7 Nationals at Goa in 2006 and Lucknow in 2007. Besides that, he had also participated in the Nagpur FIDE Rating Tournament in September 2007. He has won lot of prizes in the open events. Sayandeep has set his ambition to become a rated player and perform creditably in the State and National events in the year 2008.


Notable Performances of the other trainees

  • 7-year old Aayush Bafna got the 8th prize in the King's Chess Academy Under-7 Tournament held at Andheri Sports Complex in December 2007.

  • 9-year Rahul Lamge secured 2nd postion in the DSO selection tournament at Kandivali, 2nd place in the Rotary Club Tournament at Malad (West), Kranti Memorial Tournament at Ghatkopar and Anand Chess Festival at Malad.

  • 14-year old Devika Pradhan won the "Best Female" player award at the MCF Chess Festival 2007 in the Open Category.
